Bike Pooling in Chennai: Sharing the Ride to OMR

If you work on Old Mahabalipuram Road, you know the morning rush. From Perungudi and Thoraipakkam down to Sholinganallur and Siruseri, Chennai's IT corridor pulls in riders from across the south of the city, all aiming for the same office gates at the same time.
Most of those two-wheelers carry one person. Bike pooling fills the second seat.
The routes that suit bike pooling
- Velachery and Medavakkam to OMR. Short, busy, and made by a lot of people at the same hour.
- Pallikaranai to Thoraipakkam along the radial road that links the south of the city to OMR.
- Tambaram and Chromepet to Guindy and the OMR offices. Longer rides, where sharing the fuel matters most.
- Porur and Anna Nagar to Guindy and Ambattur Industrial Estate.
What it costs
The rider sets a share of the petrol, and you see it before you book. An example:
- A 30 km round trip on a 110cc scooter uses about 0.67 litres. Owners of popular scooters report around 45–47 km a litre in city traffic, and commuter motorcycles often do better.
- With petrol in Chennai at ₹107.76 a litre, that is about ₹72 a day.
- Over 22 working days, ₹1,584 a month.
- Shared between rider and pillion, ₹792 each.
The exact figure depends on your route, bike and the petrol price that day.
Safety and trust
Both rider and pillion must wear a helmet under Indian law. On ZoinZo, riders note whether they carry a spare one, so check before you book or bring your own.
You see the rider's name, photo, vehicle and ratings before you ride, and you can chat in the app first. Women can choose Pink Rides, offered and booked only by women.

Tips for a smooth bike pool in Chennai
- Meet on the rider's way, at a bus stop or junction on Velachery Main Road or the radial road, rather than inside a residential street.
- Start a little early in summer. Mornings are cooler, and an early start also misses the worst of the OMR queue.
- Keep rain gear handy from October to December, when the north-east monsoon brings Chennai most of its rain.
- Carry your own helmet if you can. Then the ride never depends on a spare.
- Chat in the app before the first ride, so pickup is quick.
